Easy Whole Wheat Bread

  1. Using solid shortening generously grease two 9 x 5-inch or 8 x 4-inch loaf pans.
  2. Lightly spoon flour into measuring cup.
  3. Level off and combine dry ingredients in large mixing bowl.
  4. Heat 2 1/4 cups milk and 1/4 cup cooking oil until very warm (120u0b0 to 130u0b0). Add 1 egg and warm liquid to flour mixture.
  5. Beat 1/2 minute at low speed, 3 minutes at medium speed.
  6. By hand, gradually stir in 1 cup whole wheat flour and 3 to 4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour to form soft dough.
  7. Knead on floured surface until smooth and elastic.
  8. Place dough in greased bowl turning to grease all sides of dough.
  9. Let rise until double, about 1 hour.
  10. Punch down and shape into 2 loaves.
  11. Let rise again 30 to 45 minutes.
  12. Bake at 350u0b0 for 40 to 45 minutes.
