Grandma K's Mulled Wine
- 1 cup sugar
- 15 whole cloves
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 5 star anise
- 1 grated zest of 1/2 lemon
- 3 cup water
- 2 (750 ml) bottles dry red wine
- In a large saucepan, simmer the sugar, cloves, cinnamon stick, anise, lemon zest, and water for 15 minutes.
- If you prefer, you can strain the mixture at this point, but the spices will look pretty floating in the wine.
- Add the wine, and heat it, but do not boil it.
- Serve this drink warm in mugs.
