Hot Rum Toddy

  1. Spread out the granulated sugar on a small plate.
  2. Dip the rims of 4 mugs into cold water and then dip them into the sugar.
  3. Set the mugs aside.
  4. Stir together the brown sugar, rum, and cloves in a 1-quart pitcher.
  5. Whisk in the boiling water and mix well.
  6. Pour the toddy into the prepared mugs.
  7. Garnish each toddy with a cinnamon stick and a lemon slice.
  8. Serve immediately.
