Tomato Sauce With Ground Beef(Makes Approximately 6 To 7 Cups Of Sauce)
- 3 Tbsp. olive oil
- 1 medium chopped onion
- 3 cloves garlic, crushed or minced
- 1 lb. lean ground beef
- 1 (28 oz.) can Italian style plum tomatoes (with juices), cut up with scissors
- 1 (28 oz.) can crushed tomatoes
- 1 (6 oz.) can tomato paste
- 2 c. water
- 2 Tbsp. coarsely chopped parsley
- 1 tsp. dried basil
- 1 tsp. oregano
- 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. coarsely ground pepper
- 1 whole bay leaf
- salt to taste
- Heat oil in a large heavy saucepan; add onion and saute over low heat, stirring until tender and golden, about 5 minutes.
- Add the garlic; saute 1 minute.
- In the meantime, brown the beef in a skillet, stirring to crumble meat; drain off fat and add to the onion mixture.
- Add tomatoes, 2 cups water, tomato paste and all of the spices.
- Heat over a medium-low heat to simmering.
- Simmer uncovered over a low heat, stirring occasionally, for 1 hour and 15 minutes.
- Sauce will thicken as it cooks.
