White Bread

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup warm water with 1 tablespoon sugar; let stand 5 minutes.
  2. Add egg, oil, salt, dry milk, 2 1/2 cups warm water and 1/4 cup sugar.
  3. Stir in 2 cups flour; beat at medium speed of electric mixer until smooth.
  4. By hand, gradually beat in additional flour, enough to make a soft dough, mixing well after each addition so that dough is well blended.
  5. Turn out onto lightly floured board; knead until smooth and elastic, about 8 to 10 minutes.
  6. Place in greased bowl, turning once to grease top.
  7. Cover loosely with a light towel; let rise in warm place until doubled in bulk, about 1 1/2 hours.
