How To Peel the Inner Skin of Simmered Chestnuts

  1. For this trick, use a thin teaspoon and kitchen knife (or a paring knife).
  2. Put chestnuts in an enamel-coated pot and fill with enough water to cover, then bring to a boil.
  3. Turn off the heat, then cool.
  4. Keep the chestnuts in the hot water, taking them out only to peel them.
  5. Peel the outer skin from the flat side of the chestnut either from the bottom or the top with a knife.
  6. Depending on the variety, some chestnuts are easier to peel than others.
  7. Stick the end of the spoon under the outer skin like this.
  8. Remove any of the remaining outer skin with your fingers or a knife, then soak in water.
  9. For guides on using a paring knife and a butter knife to peel the outer skin of chestnuts see.
