Candy 'n Balloon Birthday Cake
- 1 (16.50- to 15.25-ounce) package confetti, yellow or white cake mix
- 1 (2-pound) package (8 cups) powdered sugar, sifted
- 3/4 cup Land O Lakes Half & Half
- 1 teaspoon almond flavoring
- Food color
- 2 brightly colored or white plastic 9-inch plates
- Ribbon
- Decorator grass or colored shredded paper
- Gumballs
- Grease and flour 2 (9-inch) round cake pans.
- Set aside.
- Prepare cake mix according to package directions; pour batter into prepared pans.
- Bake as directed on package.
- Cool completely.
- Remove from pans.
- Combine powdered sugar, half & half and almond flavoring in bowl.
- Beat at low speed, scraping bowl often, until well mixed.
- Reserve 1 cup; set aside.
- Spoon remaining icing onto cakes; spread over surface and sides of each cake.
- Divide reserved icing between 3 small bowls.
- Tint each with food color as desired.
- Fill small plastic food bags with one color of icing each.
- Cut off small tip of each bag with scissors.
- Decorate each cake with whimsical, geometric designs or polka dots.
- Place each decorated cake onto bottom of plastic plate; cut off excess plate.
- Spread decorator grass over 20-inch flat tray or aluminum foil covered cardboard.
- Place cakes onto tray.
- Insert ribbons for balloon strings into bottom of cakes.
- Place gumballs around cakes in decorator grass.
