Twin Sauerbraten Loaves
- 1/3 c. fine dry bread crumbs
- 2 lb. ground chuck
- 1 Tbsp. instant minced onion
- 1 egg, slightly beaten
- 2 tsp. seasoned salt
- 2 Tbsp. butter or margarine
- 1/4 c. cider vinegar
- 3 Tbsp. light brown sugar
- 6 whole cloves
- 2 bay leaves
- few drops gravy seasoning (browning sauce)
- 1 Tbsp. flour
- Add crumbs to 1 cup water and let stand a few minutes.
- Add meat and next 4 ingredients.
- Mix well.
- Shape into 2 loaves and brown on both sides in the butter in skillet.
- Combine 1 cup water and remaining ingredients except flour and add to meat loaves. Bring to a boil.
- Cover and simmer, basting several times with liquid in skillet and turning once, about 1 hour.
- Remove loaves, skim fat from liquid and thicken with flour mixed with a little water.
- Simmer a few minutes, adding a "little" more water if necessary.
- Strain and pour over sliced meat.
- Makes 6 to 8 servings.
