French Apple Crumb Cake
- 1 1/2 c. flour
- 1 c. sugar
- 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 3 Tbsp. vegetable shortening
- 1 egg, well beaten
- 2 c. sweetened applesauce
- 2 c. brown sugar
- Preheat oven to 300u0b0.
- Mix and sift dry ingredients into a mixing bowl.
- Cut in the shortening until crumbly.
- Add the egg, mixing well.
- Press half of the mixture into a greased 8-inch square pan.
- Spread with the applesauce and lightly press the remaining dough mixture over the sauce.
- Sprinkle with the brown sugar.
- Bake 45 minutes, then turn off oven; open oven door a little and let cake sit another 30 minutes.
- Cut into bars while warm.
- Serve with whipped cream or ice cream, if desired. Favorite spices may be added to the applesauce as well.
- Serves 8.
