My Mother'S Fruit Cake
- 1 lb. butter
- 1 lb. brown sugar
- 4 eggs
- 1/2 c. sour milk
- 1 tsp. soda
- 1 c. molasses
- 1 lb. raisins
- 1 lb. currants
- 1 lb. figs
- 1 lb. dates
- 1/4 lb. citron or lemon peel
- 1 lb. nut meats
- 5 c. flour
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 tsp. cloves
- 1 tsp. allspice
- 1 tsp. nutmeg
- Cream butter and sugar.
- Add eggs, one at a time.
- Stir soda into sour milk.
- Sift together all spices and flour; dredge all fruits and nuts in flour mixture.
- Be sure all fruits are well coated with flour.
- Pour butter, sugar and egg mixture over fruit. Add molasses and milk to fruit.
- Stir until all fruits and flour are moistened well.
- This may be mixed with the hands.
- Bake at 275u0b0 for 2 or more hours.
- Test with a straw or toothpick for doneness of batter.
