Patchwork Casserole

• 1 lb. hamburger
• 1 green pepper, chopped
• 1 large onion, chopped
• 1 lb. frozen southern style hash brown potatoes
• 1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce
• 1 (6 oz.) can tomato paste
• 1/2 tsp. salt
• 1/4 c. water
• 1/4 tsp. basil
• 1/8 tsp. pepper
• 1/2 lb. American cheese

1. Brown meat; drain.
2. Add green pepper and onion.
3. Cook until tender.
4. Add remaining ingredients except cheese.
5. Spoon 1/2 the mixture into a 1 1/2-quart casserole dish.
6. Cover with half of cheese.
7. Top with remaining meat and potato mixture.
8. Cover with aluminum foil.
9. Bake in preheated oven at 350u0b0 for 45 minutes. Uncover.
10. Cut remaining cheese in decorative shapes.
11. Arrange in patchwork design on casserole.
12. Let stand for 5 minutes or until cheese shapes have melted.
13. Serves 6.
14. Can be frozen.
