Baked Apple Crisp Stuffed Apples
- 4 baking apples medium, like Fuji or Granny Smith
- 4 tablespoons flour
- 4 tablespoons quick cooking oats
- 4 tablespoons brown sugar firmly packed
- 1 1/4 teaspoons apple pie spice or cinnamon
- 1 dash salt
- 8 teaspoons butter melted
- With a sharp paring knife, carefully carve a cavity out of apple, leaving a 1/4-inch border around edge and about 1/2-inch at bottom. Discard removed flesh and core. Arrange apples cut side up in a 9-inch casserole dish or pie plate.
- Place flour, oats, brown sugar, spice, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Stir with a fork to combine. Drizzle melted butter into bowl, and mix with fork until mixture forms large crumbs.
- Pro tip: Don't have pre-packaged apple pie spice? Make your own by combining a few teaspoons of cinnamon with a few dashes of nutmeg, allspice, ground ginger, and cardamom. Adjust balance of spices depending on your preference!
- Spoon streusel mixture evenly into each apple, packing it lightly and creating a mound at top.
- Bake on middle rack until extremely fork-tender and streusel is golden brown, 45-55 minutes.
- Check to see that apples are done. Remove from oven or add time as needed.
- Allow to cool 10-15 minutes before serving.
