Chocolate And Orange Soda Bread
- 3 5/8 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 1 3/4 tablespoons butter cold, chopped in pieces
- 5/8 cup milk chocolate chopped, or chocolate drops
- 3 7/16 tablespoons orange candied, chopped in small pieces
- 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
- Preheat the oven to 220C.
- Line a baking tray with parchment paper and set aside.
- Sift the flour, soda, salt, and sugar in a large bowl.
- Add the butter and rub together with the fingertips until completely blended.
- Make a well in the center and add the buttermilk. Work into a dough ball by hand. Add more buttermilk as necessary. the dough should be soft but not too sticky.
- Place the dough on a lightly floured work surface and shape into a ball about 3-4 centimeters big. Do not knead the dough too much.
- Sprinkle the top with flour and make a deep cut in the surface in the shape of a cross or X.
- Bake for 35 minutes until golden brown and a knock to the base sounds hollow.
- Best eaten the same day, or toasted on the day after.
