Chocolate And Orange Soda Bread

  1. Preheat the oven to 220C.
  2. Line a baking tray with parchment paper and set aside.
  3. Sift the flour, soda, salt, and sugar in a large bowl.
  4. Add the butter and rub together with the fingertips until completely blended.
  5. Make a well in the center and add the buttermilk. Work into a dough ball by hand. Add more buttermilk as necessary. the dough should be soft but not too sticky.
  6. Place the dough on a lightly floured work surface and shape into a ball about 3-4 centimeters big. Do not knead the dough too much.
  7. Sprinkle the top with flour and make a deep cut in the surface in the shape of a cross or X.
  8. Bake for 35 minutes until golden brown and a knock to the base sounds hollow.
  9. Best eaten the same day, or toasted on the day after.
