Old Time Beef Stew

  1. In Dutch oven, thoroughly brown meat in 2 tablespoons hot shortening, turning often.
  2. Add 2 cups hot water and next 9 ingredients.
  3. Cover; simmer for 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally, to keep from sticking.
  4. Remove bay leaves and garlic.
  5. Add vegetables.
  6. Cover and cook 30 to 45 minutes or until vegetables are tender.
  7. Serves 6 to 8.
