French Toast Croque Monsieur

  1. In a small pot melt 1 T butter on medium temperature for the bechamel sauce.
  2. Add the flour and mix together until a light brown thick gravy forms.
  3. Slowly whisk in the milk, add the salt, pepper and 1 pinch of the nutmeg.
  4. Lower heat to low and set aside.nn a separate bowl whisk an egg and add a pinch of nutmeg and the cinnamon.
  5. In a medium fry pan melt 1/2 T of the butter.
  6. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture and fry 1 side of each piece until golden brown and set aside.
  7. Heat the ham steak.
  8. Now assemble each sandwich with the cooked side of the bread facing in. Layer the ham steak, the bechamel sauce and the shredded cheese.
  9. Now add the rest of the butter to the fry pan and cook the sandwiches like you would a grilled cheese making sure each side gets golden brown.
  10. Top with powdered sugar and maple syrup - serve immediately.
