German-Style Stutenkerl
- 4 cups white flour
- 1 package yeast
- 7/8 cup milk at room temperature
- 6 3/8 tablespoons sugar
- 7 1/8 tablespoons margarine melted
- 3 egg yolks
- 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- salt
- 1 lemon
- 7 1/8 tablespoons raisins
- 2 egg whites
- Place the flour in a large bowl and form a hole in the middle.
- Mix the yeast with the milk and sugar in a different bowl, and place the mixture in the middle of the flour. Cover it with plastic wrap and let it sit for 15 minutes in a warm place.
- Add the margarine, egg yolks, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, a pinch of salt, and lemon zest to the large bowl, and knead all the ingredients together. Cover them again with plastic wrap and let it sit for 50 minutes in a warm place.
- Preheat the oven at 200 degrees Celsius after 30 minutes of waiting.
- Place the dough on the countertop and flatten it using a rolling pin.
- Form the cookies using a man-shaped cookie cutter and place them on a cooking tray with a layer of parchment paper.
- Paint the cookies with the egg yolks, decorate by forming faces and buttons with the raisins, and bake for 25 minutes.
- Remove from the oven, let them cool off completely, and serve.
