German-Style Stutenkerl

  1. Place the flour in a large bowl and form a hole in the middle.
  2. Mix the yeast with the milk and sugar in a different bowl, and place the mixture in the middle of the flour. Cover it with plastic wrap and let it sit for 15 minutes in a warm place.
  3. Add the margarine, egg yolks, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, a pinch of salt, and lemon zest to the large bowl, and knead all the ingredients together. Cover them again with plastic wrap and let it sit for 50 minutes in a warm place.
  4. Preheat the oven at 200 degrees Celsius after 30 minutes of waiting.
  5. Place the dough on the countertop and flatten it using a rolling pin.
  6. Form the cookies using a man-shaped cookie cutter and place them on a cooking tray with a layer of parchment paper.
  7. Paint the cookies with the egg yolks, decorate by forming faces and buttons with the raisins, and bake for 25 minutes.
  8. Remove from the oven, let them cool off completely, and serve.
