Swedish 3 Grain Brown Bread
- 1/2 cups Brown Sugar, Packed
- 1/2 cups Softened Butter
- 1 cup Old Fashioned Rolled Oats Plus Extra For Garnish
- 1 cup Dark Rye Flour
- 2 cups Whole Wheat Flour
- 2 cups All-purpose Flour
- 3 Tablespoons Whole Anise Seed, Plus Extra For Garnish
- 1 teaspoon Salt
- 4 teaspoons Baking Soda
- 2-1/2 cups Buttermilk, Or Same Amount Regular Milk With 2 1/2 Tablespoons Vinegar Added
- Preheat oven to 350F.
- Grease or line with parchment, two 9x5x3 inch loaf pans or 4 small loaf pans.
- In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream the sugar and butter. In a separate bowl combine all dry ingredients. Add dry ingredients to the creamed mixture along with the buttermilk. Mix until thoroughly combined.
- Divide mixture evenly amongst the pans and sprinkle tops with additional rolled oats and anise seeds.
- Bake for 1 hour or until a toothpick comes out clean. Turn out of pans and allow to cool on racks.
