Chocolate Applesauce Cake
- 2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
- 1/3 c. unsweetened cocoa
- 2 tsp. baking soda
- 3/4 tsp. salt
- 3/4 c. shortening
- 1 3/4 c. sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
- 1 1/2 c. sweetened applesauce
- 1/2 c. buttermilk
- In small bowl, combine flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt. In large bowl, cream shortening and sugar.
- Beat in eggs and vanilla.
- In small bowl, combine applesauce and buttermilk.
- Mix well.
- Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture alternately with applesauce mixture.
- Mix until well blended.
- Pour batter into greased 13 x 9 x 12-inch pan.
- Bake in preheated 350u0b0 oven 35 to 40 minutes or until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean.
- Cool completely in pan on wire rack.
- Serve plain or top with your favorite frosting.
