Gramma’S Apple Pie
- 6 cups Sliced Apples
- 1/2 cups Boiling Water
- 1/2 cups Brown Sugar, Packed
- 1/2 cups Granulated Sugar
- 1/2 teaspoons Salt
- 1/2 teaspoons Ground Nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoons Ground Cinnamon
- 3 Tablespoons Quick Cooking Tapioca
- 1 teaspoon Lemon Zest
- 2 Tablespoons Butter
- 1 whole Double Pie Crust
- Please note that you can of course make your own pie crust. I frequently do. It's just easier to say a package of pie crust.
- Preheat the oven to 450F.
- To start, peel, core and slice the apples. I use Granny Smith apples because it gives the pie a nice tang, but make sure they are baking apples!
- Put the apples into a large pot with the boiling water and let the apples cook covered for about 4-5 minutes so that they're just a little bit soft. Then set aside to cool.
- While this is happening, mix up the dry ingredients including the zest.
- After the apples are a little cool, mix in half of the dry ingredients in with them.
- Then put the mix into the pie shell and cover the top with the rest of the dry mix.
- Finally, put the top shell on. Lattice, or full on top with slits. Go crazy.
- Put the pie into the oven and cook at 450F for 10 minutes then reduce the heat to 350F and cook for the remaining 30 minutes or until done.
- Enjoy!
