Caramel (Burnt Sugar) Cake

  1. Grease and flour two (9-inch) pans or 13 x 9-inch oblong pan. Bake at 350u0b0 for 30 to 35 minutes.
  2. Melt sugar in heavy skillet. Remove from heat and slowly add boiling water, stirring constantly.
  3. Stir over low heat until all lumps are dissolved. Pour into measuring cup 1/4 cup caramel mixture and enough water to make 1 cup liquid cream shortening and sugar together until fluffy.
  4. Add eggs and beat thoroughly.
  5. Sift flour, baking powder and salt together.
  6. Add to shortening mixture alternately with caramel mixture.
