Black Bottom Pie

  1. Combine sugar and cornstarch.
  2. Add scalded milk to egg yolks; add to sugar mixture. Cook until spoon is coated.
  3. Add 1 cup to chocolate bits.
  4. Add vanilla.
  5. Pour in shell.
  6. Soften gelatin in cold water and add to remaining hot custard.
  7. Stir until dissolved.
  8. Chill.
  9. Fold in egg whites to which 1/4 cup sugar has been added.
  10. Add rum.
  11. Pour over chocolate mixture.
  12. Garnish with whipped cream and chocolate.
