Chicken With Dumplings

  1. Place chicken in large kettle with water to cover, season with salt and pepper.
  2. Simmer until tender.
  3. Remove chicken from bone. Place chicken broth and 2 cups of the milk into kettle and bring to simmer.
  4. Sift together flour, salt and baking powder.
  5. Combine liquid shortening and 1/3 cup milk.
  6. Add liquids to flour mixture and mix well.
  7. Place dough between waxed paper and roll to 1/8-inch thick.
  8. Cut in 1 1/2-inch squares.
  9. Drop into kettle of simmering chicken, broth and milk.
  10. Cover and simmer 40 minutes.
  11. Add salt and pepper to taste to liquid.
  12. Good dumplings need pepper.
