Favorite Brown Meat Stew

  1. Roll beef in blended salt, pepper, paprika and flour to coat each piece.
  2. Then brown the meat in the Crisco in a heavy kettle. This browning gives rich, brown gravy and extra flavor to the meat, so it pays to take time to do a thorough job here.
  3. Add water and seasonings.
  4. Cover tightly and simmer about 2 hours.
  5. (Do not boil. "Let the water smile, but never laugh.")
  6. Add the prepared vegetables.
  7. Cover and cook another 30 minutes or until the vegetables are tender when pierced with a fork.
