Old-Fashioned Taffy

  1. Combine sugar, corn syrup, water and cream of tartar in a saucepan; stir until boiling begins.
  2. Continue boiling until mixture forms a ball when dropped into a small bowl of very cold water.
  3. Remove from heat; stir in butter and vanilla.
  4. Pour into buttered platters.
  5. When cool enough, pull with buttered hands. Add coloring while pulling.
  6. When candy is light in color and gets hard to pull, cut in fourths.
  7. Pull each piece into long strand, about 1/2 inch thick with buttered scissors.
  8. Quickly snip in bite-size pieces.
  9. Wrap each in waxed paper.
  10. Makes 1 1/4 pounds.
