Southern Fried Okra
- 1 pound Fresh Okra, Cut Into 1/2" Slices
- 3/4 cups Buttermilk (I Use Fridaypeach's Recipe Here On Tasty Kitchen)
- 32 ounces, fluid Vegetable Oil
- 1 cup Self Rising White Cornmeal
- 1 teaspoon Salt
- 1-1/2 teaspoon Sugar
- 1/4 teaspoons Cayenne Pepper
- Cover okra with buttermilk in a large bowl. Place in the fridge for 10 minutes (longer is okay).
- Meanwhile, heat oil to 375u0b0F in a Dutch oven or-yikes-a Fry Daddy! Does anyone other than me still own one?
- Mix dry ingredients in a small bowl. Remove okra from buttermilk. Dredge through cornmeal mix, shake off excess, and drop into hot oil. Fry okra in batches for about 3 minutes or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
- As I stated above, I use these as croutons for a salad; it makes me feel better about eating this southern fried okra!
