German Chocolate Cake

  1. Bake cake according to directions on package, using 2 (9-inch) round pans.
  2. Cool completely.
  3. Beat egg yolks slightly and pour into heavy 2 to 3-quart saucepan.
  4. Add sugar, butter, vanilla and milk.
  5. Stir together well; cook and stir over medium heat until thickened, about 10 to 12 minutes.
  6. To help thicken, you may add 2 to 3 tablespoons cornstarch.
  7. Add to ingredients before starting to cook.
  8. Remove from heat; add coconut and chopped pecans, stirring well to mix.
  9. Cool completely and spread between layers. Spread the rest over top and sides of cake.
