German Chocolate Cake
- 1 box chocolate cake mix
- 1 1/2 c. sugar
- 1 1/2 c. evaporated milk
- 4 egg yolks
- 1 c. butter or margarine
- 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
- 1 tall can coconut (7 oz.)
- 1 1/2 c. chopped pecans
- Bake cake according to directions on package, using 2 (9-inch) round pans.
- Cool completely.
- Beat egg yolks slightly and pour into heavy 2 to 3-quart saucepan.
- Add sugar, butter, vanilla and milk.
- Stir together well; cook and stir over medium heat until thickened, about 10 to 12 minutes.
- To help thicken, you may add 2 to 3 tablespoons cornstarch.
- Add to ingredients before starting to cook.
- Remove from heat; add coconut and chopped pecans, stirring well to mix.
- Cool completely and spread between layers. Spread the rest over top and sides of cake.
