Potted Beef

  1. Cook the sliced onions in a bit of butter until just limp and tender.
  2. Use them to line a 1 1/2-quart baking dish, over the bottom and up the sides if you can manage it.
  3. Add a layer of beef, a layer of carrots, then repeat, seasoning each layer with salt and pepper and a few drops of soy sauce, until all is used. Make up mashed potatoes or use leftovers; spread over meat with a nice swirl, then trickle the cream over.
  4. Top with crumbs and melted butter.
  5. Bake at 400u0b0 until heated through, about 30 minutes.
  6. Serves 4.
