Buttermilk Sugar Cookies
- FOR THE COOKIES:
- 1/2 cups Butter, Softened
- 1 cup Sugar
- 1 whole Egg, Beaten
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla
- 3-1/4 cups All-purpose Flour
- 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
- 1/2 teaspoons Salt
- 1/2 cups Buttermilk
- _____
- FOR THE ICING:
- 1 cup Powdered Sugar
- 3 Tablespoons Milk
- 4 drops Food Coloring
- Cream the butter with the sugar. Add the egg and mix thoroughly, then stir in vanilla. Combine the flour, baking soda and salt in a separate bowl. With the mixer running, gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Roll out the dough on a floured surface and cut with hearts or other shapes. Place on ungreased baking sheets and bake for 8-10 minutes for small cookies or 10-12 minutes for large cookies, or until light brown around edges. Cool on wire racks.
- Mix together powdered sugar and milk for a simple icing or use store bought frosting to decorate as desired. Tint with about 4 drops of food coloring, or more if you want darker colors, and add tinted sugars, sprinkles or other decorations.
