Southwest Iowa'S Sweet 'N Sour Sauerkraut
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 1/4 c. butter
- 2 Granny Smith apples, peeled and diced in 1/2-inch pieces
- 2 (16 oz.) cans sauerkraut, drained
- 1 (28 oz.) can crushed tomatoes, undrained
- 3/4 c. packed light brown sugar
- 1/2 c. dry white wine (optional)
- 1 Tbsp. caraway seed
- black pepper to taste
- Preheat oven to 325u0b0.
- Melt butter in large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add onions and apples, saute until softened, 3 to 5 minutes.
- Combine onion and apples with sauerkraut in large mixing bowl.
- Stir in tomatoes, brown sugar and wine.
- Season with caraway seed and pepper.
- Place mixture in a 9 x 13-inch baking dish.
- Cover tightly with foil and bake 1 1/4 hours.
- Uncover and bake another 1/2 hour.
- Serve as a side dish to roast turkey. Serves 12 people.
