Mom’S Sugar Cookies

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  2. Cream margarine and powdered sugar until fluffy. (Butter is NOT recommended for this recipe because the dough will not hold it's shape during baking.) Add egg and vanilla and beat until creamy and smooth. Add dry ingredients and mix well. Cover and chill at least 8 hours; better overnight.
  3. Roll out on a floured surface (a pastry cloth is great for this) until the dough is 1/4 inch thick. Cut out with desired cookie cutters. Put on a cookie sheet and bake for 8 - 10 minutes until edges are just lightly browned. Cool and frost.
  4. You can also roll a walnut-sized ball in sugar, put on a cookie sheet and mash with the sugared bottom of glass. Bake as before.
