Prune Drop Cookies(1933 Recipe)
- 1 c. brown sugar
- 2 eggs
- 4 Tbsp. prune juice
- 2 c. flour
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 c. lard or Crisco shortening (no oil)
- 1 c. cooked prunes, chopped (pitted are best)
- 1 Tbsp. sour milk or buttermilk *
- 1 c. soft shortening
- 2 c. brown sugar, packed
- 2 eggs
- 1/2 c. water, sour milk or buttermilk
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 3 1/2 c. sifted Gold Medal flour
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. soda
- 1/8 tsp. cinnamon
- Date Filling (recipe follows)
- Heat oven to 400u0b0.
- Mix thoroughly shortening, brown sugar and eggs.
- Stir in water and vanilla.
- Sift together and stir in flour, salt, soda and cinnamon.
- Drop with teaspoon on ungreased baking sheet.
- Place 1/2 teaspoon Date Filling on dough; cover with another 1/2 teaspoon of dough.
- Bake until lightly browned, 10 to 12 minutes.
- Makes 5 to 6 dozen.
