Apple Dumplings
- 1 1/2 c. sugar
- 1 1/2 c. water
- 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp. nutmeg
- 3 Tbsp. butter
- 2 c. flour
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. salt
- 2/3 c. solid shortening
- 1/2 c. milk
- 6 apples, cored
- Combine the first 4 ingredients; bring to a boil.
- Stir in butter.
- Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt; cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add milk all at once; stir only until dry ingredients are moistened.
- Roll to 1/4-inch thickness on floured surface.
- Cut into six 6-inch squares.
- Place apple in center of each; sprinkle each generously with cinnamon, sugar and nutmeg.
- Dot with butter.
- Moisten edges of squares and fold corners to center; pinch together.
- Place one inch apart in an 11 1/2 x 7-inch pan.
- Bake for 1 hour at 350u0b0.
