Spicy Applesauce Cake
- 2 cups applesauce
- 1-1/2 cups sugar
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking cocoa
- 1-1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon each ground cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and cloves
- 1 cup raisins
- 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
- 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- In a large bowl, beat the applesauce, sugar, shortening and eggs. Combine the flour, cocoa, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and cloves; gradually beat into applesauce mixture until blended. Stir in the raisins, chocolate chips and walnuts.
