Chocolate Date Nut Cake

  1. Preheat oven to 350u0b0.
  2. Grease a 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan and set aside.
  3. In a medium bowl, stir together flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt; set aside.
  4. In another medium bowl, combine 1/3 cup sugar, chocolate and walnuts; set aside.
  5. In a large bowl with an electric mixer at high speed, cream shortening and remaining 1 cup of sugar until light and fluffy.
  6. Beat in eggs and vanilla at low speed.
  7. Alternately stir in flour mixture and water, just until blended.
  8. Stir in dates.
