Bill'S Favorite Black Bottom Pie

  1. Combine sugar and cornstarch.
  2. Slowly add scalded milk to beaten egg yolks.
  3. Stir in sugar mixture.
  4. Cook and stir in top of double boiler until custard coats spoon.
  5. Add vanilla.
  6. To one cup of custard, add chocolate bits.
  7. Stir until melted.
  8. Pour on cooled pie shell.
  9. Soften gelatin in cold water.
  10. Add to remaining hot custard.
  11. Stir until dissolved.
  12. Chill until slightly thick. Beat egg whites, adding sugar gradually until mixture stands in stiff peaks.
  13. Fold custard-gelatin mixture.
  14. Pour over chocolate layer and chill until set.
  15. Garnish with whipped cream or shaved chocolate.
