Chocolate-Caramel Layer Squares
- 1 (14 oz.) bag caramels
- 2/3 c. evaporated milk, divided
- 1 (18 1/2 oz.) pkg. regular German chocolate cake mix
- 3/4 c. butter or margarine, softened
- 1 c. chopped nuts
- 1 (6 oz.) pkg. semi-sweet chocolate morsels
- Combine
- caramels and 1/3 cup evaporated milk in top of double boiler;
- cook
- stirring
- constantly
- until caramels are completely melted.
- Remove
- double
- boiler from heat.tombine dry cake mix, remaining
- 1/3
- cup
- milk, butter and nuts; stir until dough holds together.
- Press
- 1/2 of cake mixture into a greased 13 x 9 x 2-inch
- baking
- pan.
- Bakett
- 350u0b0
- for
- 6 minutes.
- Sprinkle chocolate morsels over crust.
- Pour caramel mixture over chocolate
- morsels,
- spreading
- evenly.
- Crumble remaining cake mixture
- over
- caramel mixture.
- Return to oven and bake 15 to 18 minutes;
- cool.
- Chill 30 minutes; cut into small bars.
- Yields about 5 dozen.
