Msgr. Charles Bread
- 2 c. light brown sugar
- 1/2 c. butter
- 1 c. chopped pecans
- 3 c. all-purpose flour, divided
- 1 tsp. ground allspice
- 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp. ground nutmeg
- 2 eggs
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1 c. buttermilk or sour milk
- Preheat oven to 350u0b0.
- Cream brown sugar and butter.
- Add nuts, 1 cup flour, allspice, cinnamon and nutmeg; mix well. Remove 1 cup of mixture and refrigerate.
- To remainder of mixture, add eggs.
- Sift together 2 cups flour, baking powder, salt and baking soda.
- Add flour mixture and buttermilk alternately to egg mixture.
- Pour into greased 12 x 8 x 2-inch pan.
- Sprinkle top with reserved 1 cup spice mixture.
- Bake for 40 minutes.
- Remove from oven; cool before cutting into squares.
- Bread will keep 1 week or can be frozen.
- Serve with tea in late afternoon.
