Homemade Sloppy Joes
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 8 ounces ground chuck
- 8 ounces ground sirloin
- 1 cup finely chopped sweet onion (from 1 medium onion)
- 1/2 cup finely chopped green bell (from 1 small pepper)
- 1/2 cup finely chopped carrot (from 1 medium carrot)
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1/4 cup dry red wine
- 2 cups crushed tomatoes (from 1 28-oz. can)
- 1 1/2 tablespoons light brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 2 teaspoons kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper
- 6 hamburger buns, toasted and split in half
- Add wine, and cook, stirring often, until liquid is evaporated, 3 minutes. Stir in crushed tomatoes, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and crushed red pepper. Bring to a boil over medium-high, reduce to low and simmer 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Divide mixture evenly on the bottom of buns, top with bun top, and serve immediately.
