Herb Bread
- 1 pkg. dry yeast
- 1 1/4 c. warm water (105~ to 115~)
- 1 tsp. caraway seed
- 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp. sage
- 2 Tbsp. shortening
- 2 Tbsp. sugar
- 2 tsp. salt
- 2 2/3 c. flour (if using self-rising, omit salt)
- Dissolve yeast in warm water.
- Add shortening, sugar, salt, caraway seed, nutmeg, sage and 2 cups flour.
- Blend well.
- Beat 2 minutes at medium speed.
- Add remaining flour and beat until smooth.
- Scrape sides of bowl.
- Cover and let rise 30 minutes or until double.
- Stir down by beating 30 strokes.
- Spread evenly in loaf pan (9 x 5 x 3-inch).
- Smooth top with floured hands.
- Cover and let rise 40 minutes or until double.
- Heat oven to 375u0b0.
- Bake 45 minutes or until loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
- Butter tops and remove from pan to cool.
