Soft Molasses Cookies
- 1 c. molasses
- 1 c. sugar
- 1 c. melted shortening
- 1 egg, slightly beaten
- 4 tsp. soda
- 2 tsp. vanilla
- 5 3/4 c. sifted flour
- 1 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
- 1 1/2 tsp. ginger
- 1/2 tsp. cloves
- 1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 2/3 c. hot water
- Combine sugar and melted shortening in mixing bowl; mix well. Add molasses and vanilla.
- Mix egg in mixture.
- Have ready the flour, mixed and sifted with salt, cream of tartar and spices. Dissolve the soda in hot water; add to molasses mixture.
- Mix well.
- Add sifted ingredients all at once.
- Stir to thoroughly mix.
- Cover the bowl; refrigerate overnight or longer to make rolling easy.
- When ready to bake on lightly greased cookie sheet, roll a portion of the dough and cut with a 3 or 3 1/2-inch cookie cutter.
- Place 2 inches apart.
- Bake at 400u0b0 for about 9 to 10 minutes.
- Remove immediately when baked.
