Apple Dumplings

  1. Place water, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and food coloring in a pot.
  2. Cook until boiling; add butter.
  3. Peel and slice 6 apples. Mix flour, baking powder and salt.
  4. Cut in shortening.
  5. Add milk. Roll out onto lightly floured board.
  6. Cut dough into 6 (6-inch) squares.
  7. Place apples on dough and sprinkle generously with cinnamon, sugar and nutmeg.
  8. Also place a dab of butter on them. Fold corners into center and pinch seams closed.
  9. Place in a baking dish.
  10. Pour the sugar syrup over dumplings and sprinkle generously with sugar.
  11. Bake at 375u0b0 for 35 minutes.
