Doughnuts

  1. Sift together first 6 ingredients.
  2. Work shortening with spoon until creamy.
  3. Add sugar gradually, while continuing to work until light.
  4. Add eggs; beat well with spoon.
  5. Add flour mixture alternately with milk, blending well with spoon with each addition. Add nuts and enough of 1/2 cup flour to make a soft, easily handled dough.
  6. Chill 1 hour or longer.
  7. Roll dough on floured board to 1/2-inch thickness; cut out with floured doughnut cutter.
  8. Form trimmings into a ball; roll and cut as before.
