Chili With Broiled Bananas

  1. Break up beef in Dutch oven or kettle.
  2. Add onion, garlic, green pepper and celery.
  3. Cook, stirring frequently until beef is brown and vegetables are tender.
  4. Add tomatoes, tomato sauce, chili powder, sugar, salt, bay leaf, oregano and basil.
  5. Cook over moderate heat for 30 minutes.
  6. Add kidney beans; cook 15 minutes longer.
  7. Just before serving, peel bananas.
  8. Cut in half lengthwise, brush with melted butter or margarine and broil about 2 minutes.
  9. Just until tender.
  10. Place 2 banana halves on each plate and top with chili.
  11. Makes 8 servings.
