Chili With Broiled Bananas
- 2 lb. ground beef
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1 clove garlic, crushed
- 1 green pepper, chopped
- 1/2 c. chopped celery with leaves
- 1 can (1 lb. 12 oz.) tomatoes
- 1 can (15 oz.) tomato sauce
- 2 Tbsp. chili powder
- 1 Tbsp. sugar
- 2 tsp. salt
- 1 bay leaf
- 1/2 tsp. dried leaf oregano
- 1/2 tsp. dried leaf basil
- 2 cans (1 lb. each) kidney beans, drained
- 8 firm bananas
- Break up beef in Dutch oven or kettle.
- Add onion, garlic, green pepper and celery.
- Cook, stirring frequently until beef is brown and vegetables are tender.
- Add tomatoes, tomato sauce, chili powder, sugar, salt, bay leaf, oregano and basil.
- Cook over moderate heat for 30 minutes.
- Add kidney beans; cook 15 minutes longer.
- Just before serving, peel bananas.
- Cut in half lengthwise, brush with melted butter or margarine and broil about 2 minutes.
- Just until tender.
- Place 2 banana halves on each plate and top with chili.
- Makes 8 servings.
