Alice Smith'S Jumbo Raisin Cookies

  1. Simmer raisins in water 5 minutes.
  2. Drain and save 1/2 cup liquid.
  3. Blend shortening, spices and vanilla.
  4. Add sugar gradually, creaming thoroughly.
  5. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Sift together flour, baking powder and salt.
  6. Add baking soda to the liquid.
  7. Add flour, mix alternately with liquid to creamed mixture; mixing well.
  8. Add raisins and chopped nuts.
  9. Chill.
  10. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto greased baking sheet and bake at 400u0b0 for 10 to 12 minutes.
  11. Yields 3 dozen.
