Ribbon Cookies

  1. Cream shortening and sugar.
  2. Add the beaten egg and vanilla; mix well.
  3. Add the dry ingredients:
  4. flour, baking powder and salt; blend together.
  5. Divide the dough into 3 parts.
  6. To the first add 1/4 cup candied cherries, cut up, and the red food coloring.
  7. To the second part, add the chopped nuts and melted chocolate.
  8. To third part, add the poppy seed.
  9. Blend each part thoroughly.
  10. Line an ice cube tray or long narrow bread pan with waxed paper.
  11. Layer dough into pan in order made.
  12. Chill overnight.
  13. Next day, preheat oven to 400u0b0.
  14. Turn dough onto a cutting board and slice into 1/8-inch slices.
  15. Bake on greased cookie sheets for 10 to 12 minutes.
