Vidalia Onion Casserole
- 6 large Vidalia onions
- 1/3 c. butter or margarine
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. sugar
- 1/2 tsp. pepper
- 1/2 c. vermouth
- 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 to 1 c. shredded Swiss, Gruyere or Jarlsberg cheese
- 1/4 c. fine dry bread crumbs
- 1 tsp. paprika
- 2 Tbsp. butter or margarine, melted
- Preheat oven to 350u0b0.
- Cut onions into 3/4-inch slices.
- In a 12-inch skillet, cook onions in butter or margarine until tender. Sprinkle with salt, sugar and pepper.
- Add vermouth and Worcestershire sauce.
- Cook 3 minutes.
- Transfer onion mixture to a 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking dish.
- Sprinkle with cheese.
- Combine bread crumbs, paprika and melted butter.
- Sprinkle over cheese. Bake for 20 minutes.
- Serves 6.
