Old-Fashioned Spicy Cookies(Family Favorite)
- 4 c. sifted all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 1/2 tsp. ginger
- 1/2 tsp. cloves
- 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp. allspice
- 1/3 c. water
- 1/2 tsp. rum flavoring
- 1 tsp. soda
- 1 c. dark molasses
- 1/2 c. shortening
- 1 c. granulated sugar
- Sift together the flour, salt, ginger, cloves, nutmeg and allspice.
- Combine water and rum flavoring.
- Add soda to molasses. Thoroughly cream shortening and sugar.
- Add half the dry ingredients, half the water and rum flavoring, then half the molasses, blending well after each addition.
- Repeat; chill dough for several hours or overnight.
- On well-floured surface, roll 1/4-inch thick and cut with a 3-inch cutter.
- Bake on a greased cookie sheet in a moderate oven (375u0b0) for 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned; watch carefully so they do not burn.
- Let stand a few minutes, then remove.
- Makes about 3 dozen.
