Waldorf Astoria Red Cake

  1. Cream shortening and sugar.
  2. Add eggs and set aside.
  3. Make a paste of cocoa and food coloring; add to creamed mixture.
  4. Add buttermilk alternately with flours mixed with salt.
  5. Add vanilla. Combine baking soda and vinegar and add to batter.
  6. Blend well. Turn into 2 lightly greased and floured 8 or 9-inch cake pans. Bake at 350u0b0 for 25 to 35 minutes.
  7. Cool slightly, then turn out on rack.
  8. Cool completely before frosting.
