Potato And Kielbasa Gratin

  1. In a large heavy saucepan, cover the potatoes with 2 inches salted water; bring the water to a boil and simmer the potatoes, covered, for 10 minutes.
  2. Drain and let cool.
  3. Peel the potatoes and grate them.
  4. In a heavy skillet, cook the onions in 4 tablespoons butter over moderate heat, stirring, until it is softened; add the garlic and kielbasa and cook the mixture, stirring, for 3 minutes.
  5. Transfer the mixture to a bowl and combine it well with the potatoes, salt and pepper; spread it in a buttered 3-quart casserole or gratin dish.
  6. In a small bowl, beat together the eggs, milk, cream, nutmeg, salt and pepper and pour over the potato mixture.
  7. Sprinkle with the bread crumbs and cheese; dot with the remaining butter and bake the gratin in a preheated 375u0b0 oven for 45 minutes or until it is puffed and golden brown.
