Dad'S Clam Chowder

  1. In a kettle, fry bacon; remove bacon pieces and reserve.
  2. Cook onions in fat until straw colored.
  3. Add potatoes, boiling water, tomatoes, celery, carrots, green pepper, bay leaves, thyme, salt and pepper.
  4. Cover; simmer over low heat for 30 minutes.
  5. Add caraway seed, clams and clam liquid; simmer for another 5 minutes. Serve in a hot tureen.
  6. Sprinkle top with bits of crisp bacon.
